Pride In What You Do
In today's society where "grazing" content online is de rigueur it may be hard to see where doing a proper job that you're proud of really fits in. Surely "it works" is good enough?
I don't think so. Maybe I'm old-fashioned but that's just the way I like to work. If I can't say that I'm pleased with a job then I'll work until it meets my standards. And I believe that, even if people just skim a page, a high level of quality does show.
Indeed, I would argue that the less time people take looking at something, the higher the quality is required in order to get their attention. You need to work on both the aesthetics of the work and also on words and imagery used in it. Distilling your message to the shortest phrase or the most elegant graphic is a highly skilled job.
I do need to balance this argument with pragmatism. There is little point in delivering the perfect solution if you miss the boat. But this weighs in on the argument that skill and experience are required to do the best possible job.
As I've said before - stick to what you're good at.
