Comfort Blanket

I have what is laughably called a "smart" TV. Now, call me old fashioned, but I thought that "smart" meant well turned-out in terms of appearance... and I've never noticed my TV wearing a bow tie. I digress...

My TV is in constant need of reassurance that it's done the right thing. It leaves the programme details on screen for ages once I've changed channel. And if I delete a channel from the list it asks if I'm sure that's what I want to do... am I really sure, and afterwards it demands approval by agreeing that it's "OK" that it just deleted the item.

This security blanket which my TV requires got me to thinking about businesses online. Most business people believe that they need a website and they really must use social media. I'm not sure many of these people stopped to ask "why".

Don't get me wrong. Websites and social media are great tools, but you really need to know why you're spending the time, money and effort on them if you're going to get a return. After all, without a destination it's hard to know when you've arrived.

So if the next person who offers to solve all your social media or website woes doesn't ask why you need them, walk away.
