Britain No Good At Tech?

Listening to the news this morning, a discussion was held between our hosts and a couple of IT industry pundits on why, despite the obvious talent we have in the UK, there are no huge, global brands compared with the USA. After much hand-wringing, soul searching and general head scratching, no definitive answer was found.

Meanwhile – mercifully I was on my own – my voice had turned hoarse with shouting at the radio: Brits are terribly good at this.

The reason, simply, that US companies do so much better than their British counterparts is damn all to do with ‘leadership’, innovation or a bunch of other phrases, most of which went straight over my head. It’s bloody marketing.

The Americans will spend a fortune shouting from the rooftops, very convincingly, until their audience assumes that they must be right after all. Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, HP and many more; they’re everywhere.

Big Red Moose studies marketing campaigns because it’s our job to, but I’m struggling to think of any tech company from here that has promoted themselves widely in the public domain.

Simply put, don’t whinge that we’re not getting a fair slice of the pie if corporate Britain hasn’t the confidence to put their hand in their pockets and shout about how we’re good enough to produce anything that Uncle Sam has to offer.
