Bob's Blog

And the winner is…

signs-1638668_640.jpgIf writing the blog is a pleasurable enough experience in its own right, then the appraisal every four month or so of the television advertising offerings is an added bonus. I’m sorry; did you think we were writing this blog for you? Just kidding.

To the back of the field first, as usual. The unbearable meerkats continue to annoy, and Japanese car manufacturers continue to bombard us with mysterious clichés; how on earth can a car absorb life? Is it a form of vehicular photosynthesis or, perhaps more likely, the British advertising team are taking a steer from their Japanese counterparts, in which case, perhaps they ought to invest in some decent translation software rather than the freeware given away on the cover of a PC magazine twenty years ago.

The irksome Australian woman continues smugly to tell us she can get us the best deals despite a representative of the hotel industry saying that to get the best rate, just call the place you want to stay directly. We’re still confused as to why if Purple Bricks don’t take commission, how do they afford their advertising bills, though it must be said, those ads are reasonably amusing. There are clearly more, but time is against us.

To the other end of the spectrum. MacDonald’s ‘money’s worth’ ads are still fun, particularly the young lass at the swimming gala with a rubber glove for a swimming cap always raises a chortle. By the way, we’re not here to judge the quality of the product, just the quality of the advertising. The fact that we put that disclaimer in straight after mentioning MacDonald’s is purely a coincidence…

The advertising for the Mini still tugs at the British heartstrings – made in Oxfordshire, y’know - despite the fact that it’s German owned, but the winner has to be British Airways' latest offering. Tapping into the desperate, frustrating confusion that we call Brexit, they reassure us that despite all this, we’ve still got them, and they represent everything quirky, eccentric and everything ‘British’. Very clever, with plenty of tea.

This is just our opinion, by the way. If you have any views on this or any other topic we write on, we’d love to hear them.
